ESPIONAGE TRIAL IN BERNE

SWISS PLEADS GUILTY BERNE, February 25. Reuter says that a military tribunal has sentenced a Swiss army mechanic, Willi Gerber, aged 47, to- 20 years’ imprisonment for spying for Britain, France, and the United States since 1)933. Gerber pleaded guilty to receiving £1920 for services to Britain and £520 from France. He said that he had worked for nothing for the United States “an as idealist.” The president of the tribunal said that if Gerber’s activity bad been discovered duringvtlie war lie would have been executed under military law. The president added that Gerber liad transmitted about 1650 plans and documents, some “outstandingly interest-, ing,” to foreign Governments, especially the United States, between 1942 and 1945. The Court found Gerber guilty of anonymously passing political and economic information to Sweden, Yugoslavia, and Turkey by sending unsigned letters to their Berne legations.
