LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 27, 1900). Upper Ashburton Road Board— There were present at the annual ordinary meeting of the Upper Ashburton Road Board, held in the Board’s office in West Street, Messrs C. J.Harper (chairman), N. Stitt, v I. Sargent,.G. A. M. Buckley and J. Tucker. An apology was received for the absence of Mr R. Campbell. His Worship the Mayor (Mr Hugo Friedlander) and Cr. Thomas waited upon the Board with reference to the bringing of water along the Board’s roads, and after discussion the matter was left for the Board to consider what arrangements it would be prepared to enter into with the Council. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 27, 1925). Pudding Hill Dam—Trouble at the Pudding Hill Dam has been caused by the recent north-west winds creating freshes in the North Branch stream, and washing away the temporary wall erected to supply the intake. Constant vigilance has been necessary, and steps have had to be taken to renew the wall and thus ensure a regular supply of water to the system of the county races. —Personal: Mr David Fechney, a former well-known farmer of Westerfield, died in Christchurch in his S2nd year. Mr Fechney, who resided in the Westerfield district for a long period, lived in Ashburton, Timaru and Christchurch after his retirement. He is survived by his widow, and an adult family of sons and daughters.
