EIGHT MEN SENTENCED From the R..A.F.’s Bibury, Gloucestershire, Maintenance Unit stores worth £G1,636 had been stolen. Then Golden Sally was brought in. And as a result of her work eight men were sentenced for theft at, Gloucester City Quarter Sessions recently and thousands of pounds’ worth of stolen goods were recovered. Sally, a light Alsacion, is known officially as “3191, air dog, first class, Golden Sally.” She was selected for special patrols at Bibury with her handler, R.A.F. Police Corporal A. F. Batchelor. Night after night they watched over the unit’s widely dispersed buildings. At 2 o’clock one morning Golden Sally heard movements in a hangar. She and her handler kept watch as another corporal went for help. Reinforcements arrived and a frontal assault was made on the building. The men inside ran off.
Golden Sally chased them. A man was taken in charge, but on the way to the guard-room he escaped. Again Sally gave chase. When Corporal Batchelor caught up with her she was standing over a prostrate -figure. The Recorder, Mr Kaglan Somerset, K.C., sent Alfred Green, 43, of Kelburn, N., to gaol for six years; John Joseph Chine, 28, Carton-vale, N.W., was gaoled for four years; Charles Henry Gardiner, 19, airman, of Handsworth, and John Jenkins, 33, Chippenham-road, W.,, for three years; Robert Arthur Brown, 32, airman, of Abingdon, 15 months; and William Underwood, 41, Caritonvale, 10 months. Neill Pointing, 20, Haywards Heath, was fined £100; and James Forster, 20, R.A.F., Handsworth, was sent toj Borstal.
