SMUGGLING OF PARTS ADMITTED
MOTORCYCLE SPARES BOUGHT FROM SEAMAN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Fob. 24. A charge of smuggling motor-cycle parts valued at £lO5 from the vessel Rangitiki was laid against John Casement Hunt, manager of the Hutt Speedway, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Mr W. R. Bipks, prosecuting, said that on January 5 Hunt had been intercepted on the Wellington wharves with the motor-cycle parts in a beer carton. Accused had admitted quite frankly that he had acquired the parts from one of the crew of the Rangitiki, and said he had paid £6O for the parts. Counsel for accused said that Hunt had offered to pay any duty that was assess'ed on the parts. “He probably takes the view that his crime has been found out,” said the Magistrate (Mr J. Hessell. “It is the popular view. It is smuggling, and there is no disguising it or getting away from it. It is the type that encourages dishonesty in other people.” The Magistrate imposed a fine of £35.
