FOREST TAXATION

reasonable basis wanted (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 24. Forest taxation was among the subjects discussed at the annual meeting of the Dominion Forest Owners’ Federation. The delegates present represented the- owners of 92 per cent, of the privately-owned exotic forests in New Zealand, covering 400,000 acres, Mr David Henry presided. While concessions had been obtained during the year, it was felt that more were necessary before forest taxation. was placed on a reasonable basis, said Mr Henry. The matter was being furthered by the 'Government departments concerned. Provided price control remains, it was decided to urge the reintroduction of an overtime subsidy on exotic operations, and also to press for benefits under the housing subsidy so that they would apply to exotic producers as well as indigenous producers. However, as a more desirable policy it was recommended that all subsidies and price control be abolished. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr David Henry: vice-presi-dent, Mr L. E. H. Baigent (Nelson): committee, Messrs R. K. Wylie, G. W. Sanders and G. H. Mackley.
