LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 25, 1900). None in. Ashburton—The present war in South Africa has its lessons for everybody. The “Cromwell Argus” hears that a member of the chronically impecunity fraternity in Clyde is going to dye himself khaki so as to escape the notice of his creditors. — Sporting:' The New Zealand Trotting Association has been advised by the Colonial Secretary of the. totalisator .licences allocated to affiliated clubs for the season 1899-1900. The Ashburton club has received one permit. It is considered likely that the Ashburton and Wellington clubs will each receive a second permit.—Board of Education: The Chertsey School Committee has voted for, Messrs Rennie, McMillan and Baker as members of the * Board of Education. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 25, 1925). Apprentices’ Act —One outstanding feature of the Apprentices’ Act was pointed out by an Ashburton builder to-day. Five years’ apprenticeship has to be served before the beginner in the trade can be acknowledged a journeyman, hut for purposes of the interpretation of the Act in regard to the ratio of apprentices to journeymen three years’ apprenticeship qualifies one for the journeyman’s status. • On this basis more apprentices can be employed than formerly, as the number of journeymen is greater. This is of benefit both to parents of boys and to master builders. There have been numerous inquiries for work as apprentices.
