IMMIGRANTS FROM INDONESIA
OPPORTUNITY FOR N.Z. TO GET HIGHER NUMBER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. The Netherlands Minister to New Zealand (Mr J. D. Pennink) to-day expressed gratification at the Government’s decision to permit the entry of about 600 additional Dutch nationals into New Zealand, but he suggested that New Zealand should have the opportunity of getting more immigrants. He said demobilised soldiers were being dispatched to Holland from Indonesia at the rate of 10,000 a month. Already about 50,000 of these men had left Indonesia, and it was expected that all demobilised soldiers would be gone by July. Mr Pennink said the Australian Government was seeking settlers from this demobilised group, and had entered upon a scheme for obtaining new settlers from Indonesia on a larger scale than New Zealand and in a businesslike manner.
Mr Pennink said he had received sympathetic consideration to his representations from the ■ government departments concerned, but added: “If at a later date we should obtain men from the Netherlands then additional expense and time will be occasioned. The time to act is now.”
