NEW POTATO PRICES
MERCHANTS PLEASED BY REMOVAL OP CONTROL ' * ' (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 23.. “The New Zealand Fruit and Produce Merchants and Auctioneers’ Federation congratulates the Government upon its decision to remove ceiling prices from new potatoes,” said the secretary of the federation (Mr E. E. Barrows) to-day. “Apart from the fact that the ceiling price control and guaranteed minimum was the direct cause of the famine in New Zealand potatoes in September, October and November last, the free market that will operate as a direct result of abolition of price control will eliminate the black marketer from what in the past has undoubtedly been a fruitful field for exploitation. “The federation considers that competition will once again prove the incentive and inducement to the production of quality and that equitable distribution will again be possible to the direct benefit of all concerned, particularly the consuming public.”
