Extensive damage was done to a railway locomotive and coal loading bins at the Cascade Co-operative Coal Mine, in the Buller Gorge to-day,, when the engine crashed into the bins after its brakes failed during shunting operations. The cab on the engine was completely wrecked. When the brakes failed the engine carried on down the line, went through the railway* and smashed into the loading .bins, which, when full, about 300' tons of coal, t A considerable quantity of coal fell on the engine from the bins after the smash. The fireman and the driver managed to jump clear when they saw it was impossible to avoid the accident. A relief engine was sent from Westport to clear the line and bring back the damaged locomotive. It is estimated that it will be several-days before the bins can be brought back into full use, although temporary loading arrangements have been made to allow production to be maintained.
