LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 23, 1900). Mounted Cops for Ashburton —The question of forming a mounted corps in this district has found much favour amongst the young men and others who would be eligible, and it is understood that Mr G. A. M. Buckley—who was known to be in sympathy with the idea —having been pressed to take the initiative, has consented to do so, and a meeting to arrange matters will be called probably in a day or two. —Huge Marrows: Messrs J. Sealy and Co. have on view in their shop some very large vegetable marrows. One of them measures no less than 2ft. 9in. inches'in length, with a corresponding girth.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 23, 1925). Services to Town —It will be conceded by all, that the services of Mr A. H. Todd, of Ashburton, in playing a prominent part in the successful career of the Gay Galateers concert party, and, in assisting at the last gala of the Advance Ashburton Association, have been a great benefit to the town. The total profits of the gala, which included the concert party’s takings, were for public improvements. With Mr Todd’s valued services in mind, and with the idea of compensating him to some extent for the expense incurred through his serious accident while attending the mock police court at the gala, leading citizens have arranged a benefit concert to be held on March 11.
