CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

4 Sir,—ln reference to the centennial celebrations, it has occurred to me that as you have a copy of every “Guardian" since the paper was published, that a series of articles would be welcomed. It is not sufficient that we just send a sum ofjnoney to the committee and feel that” the responsibility ends there. There is much ’that can be done. The old cemetery, where the early settlers were laid to rest, could be made at least tidy. The shortage of materials and labour, especially paint and its cost, makes -the’ town, as every other town in the Dominion, look neglected, and streets and footpaths also require attention. At the request of the Centennial Committee, I have supplied them with historical notes for the period ISSO to 1890, as far as it was possible to do so. It was during that period that I arrived in Ashburton, having come out in the clipper ship Crusader. There must be in many families records of early days, say in the period of 1860-1870. The committee would be glad of information from persons who are.in a position to supply it. John T. Pratley.

Accompanying our correspondent’s letter is a notice of the 26th annual re-union of the “Clipper Ship Crusader Association” to be held next Saturday in Christchurch. '>
