FEBRUARY 23 1836 —First ship with emigrants for South Australia left England. 1855 —Earthquake at Wellington. 1942 —Stated that Mr Churchill’s plans for consolidating the Empire include a charter granting selfgovernment to India. 1945 — Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) conferred with the works committee of the Ashburton County Council on flood damage in the County. Turkey declares war on Axis. 1946 — N.Z.E.F. ■ defeated Gloucestershire by 11 points to 9, before a crowd of 20,000. 1949—Serious flooding on West Coast.
