ATOM ARMS RACE

Elimination Appeal (Rec. 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 21. Eleven atomic scientists have called for the “utpiost attempts” now to “eliminate atomic warfare.” Dr. E. H. S. Burhop, secretary of the association of Scientific Workers, to-day issued a statement on their behalf, urging that this be done.

The recent decision of the United States to develop the hydrogen bomb, the statement says, shows that an atomic arms race is in progress, and “emphasises the dangerous direction in which humanity is moving.” The statement adds that any solution must he acceptable to all nations, though they would all have to be prepared to sacrifice some of their national interests, for a realistic hope for continued peace.,
