FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 22, 1900). Cricket Match.—A team from the Christchurch Veterans’ Club visited Ashburton on Thursday to try conclusions with a local team on the Oval. The weather was perfect and the players enjoyed themselves immensely. The home team proved too good for the visitors. An enjoyable cup of afternoon tea compensated for the defeat. Mr Wilmer, the octogenerian cricketer of Christchurch, was quite the lion of the day.—Harvest Operations: In the Methven district most of the cutting is done and stacking is going on at top speed in all directions.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
(From the “Guardian,” Feb. 22, 1925).
Failure of Power. —The electric light failed several times in Ashburton on Saturday night, due it is stated to a defective insulator on the line near Ashburton. The Diesel plant provided power from about 9.15 until shortly after. 10 o’clock, when the Coleridge power was restored. It is stated a serious operation was being performed at the County Hospital at the time of the light’s failure. The stand-by light was employed.—Housing Problem at Hinds: The housing problem is very acute in Hinds, says the “Guardian” correspondent, and there is not a house available. A large whare on wheels, drawn up near a plantation, is being utilised in lieu of a permanent home by one family.
