Photographic Competition The secretary of the Borough School Flower Show advises that the winner of the photographic competition held in conjunction with the show was Bruce Todd, with John Caithness second and Lawrence Scott third. The competition v was a great success both, financially and artistically.

Selling at Ram Fairs Following consideration of a letter from the Ashburton Associated Auctioneers, members of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association general committee yesterday endorsed a recommendation by the sheep committee that the ring system of selling be adopted at the 1950 ram fair and that members of the general committee be asked to assist.

Advice for Poultry Keepers Convened’ by the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society, an educational evening for poultry keepers will be held in the Community Centre next Monday at 8 o’clock. Mr C. J. Goldsmith, Department of Agriculture poultry instructor, who has lately been carrying out tests for pullorum disease in the district, will give an address and demonstration. Community hatchery customers, are ©specially asked to attend.

Cost of Mayoral Robes The Hastifigs Borough Council is deliberating whether to spend 77 guineas on robes for the Mayor, Mr R. I>. Brown. At a meeting of the council the Town Clerk reported receiving the following quotations from a firm of outfitters in Birmingham, England: (a) Traditional mayor’s robes of scarlet cloth faced and trimmed 'With choice musquash fur and black velvet, 63gns; (b) threecornered hat in silk, Sgns; gold hat loop, Sgns, lace jabot, 3gns. The matter was deferred for two months.

Hayes for Christchurch The New Zealand representative fast bowler, J. A. Hayes, has been transferred to Christchurch and will take* l up his new position on March 1. Hayes was the unlucky member of the New Zealand team in England last year, suffering an injury which prevented his playing after the nineteenth match of the tour. He took 26 wickets at an average of 33.57. When the New Zealand team arrived at Wellington last October, Hayes, who was not well, was taken to the Wellington Hospital for observation. He was discharged before Christmas, but lias not played cricket since his return to Auckland. —P.A.

Sea Cadet Unit at School A sub-division of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps has been formed at King’s College, Auckland, approval having been given by the New Zealand Naval Board. Thirty boys have been enrolled and will begin training immediately. The headmaster (Mr G. N. T. Greenbank) said that the boys were very keen. They would go to H.M. N.Z.S. Tamaki next Monday for a week’s initial, training. “As far as I know this is the first school to form a sea cadet sub-division as part of its school battalion,” said Mr Greenbank. “We already have the Air Training Corps, and this sub-division will drill as a specialist unit in the school battalion as the Air' Training Corps has done.” —P.A.

Women’s Day of Prayer Friday of this week, being the first Friday in Lent, is the Women’s World Day of Prayer. The observance originated among American church women over GO years ago and soon developed into an annual intercession for missions. New Zealand began regular observance in 1927, and the geographical situation of this country and the Pacific islands means that each year they have* the privilege of beginning the now world-wide day. This year the programme has been prepared by a group of Japanese Christian leaders, and the topic for the day is “Faith for Our Time.’’ In Ashburton the meeting is to be held in the afternoon at the Salvation Army Hall. Mrs Captain Thomas will be the leader, and representatives of the churches’ missionary organisations will take part.

Mr A. Roberts, F.S.M.C., England, representing Procter’s (Opticians since 1877), Christchurch, arrives in Ashburton to-morrow on a professional visit. —(Advt.)
