STEAMSHIP COMPANY SEEKS SUBSIDIES

AORANGI’S PACIFIC SERVICE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. IS. _ Subsidies from the New Zealand, Australian, and Canadian Governments are being sought by the Union Steam Ship Company for the Pacific service of its ship Aorangi. Interviewed in Wellington to-day by telephone, the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) said he had “received representations about the continuation of the service and the difficulties of the pi’esent situation.” He added that the matter was wider consideration by the New Zealand Government. The three Governments had not yet conferred. The Aorangi is the only passenger vessel providing a service between New Zealand’ and North America. It was stated here to-day that the prospects of aid from the Australian Government are thought to be good.
