RACING SHELL EXPLODES
SABOTAGE SUSPECTED OCCUPANTS HAVE NARROW ESCAPE (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) (Rec. 11.40) MELBOURNE, This Day. A two-oared racing shell, manned by W. Morgan and W. Marrows, with a 10-year-old boy as cox, exploded in five feet-of water at Lake Wesroona, Bendigo, during a training run. 4 The stern from the coxswain’s seat to the runner was wrecked. A cloud of smoke rose eight feet in the air and flying timber narrowly missed the boy. The oarsmen noticed a few minutes before the explosion that the bQat was lying in the water in an unusual way. > Club officials afterwards found two small holes drilled below tjie waterline. The boat was on the lake for half an hour before the explpsipn. No trace of chemicals or burned: material was found. 1 The police and rowing officials are considering the theory that the craft ' was sabotaged to prevent the club competing in the championship on March 18.
