TRADES COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 17. An* almost even split in the Auckland Trades Council arose at last night’s meeting of the council, when delegates representing 18 affiliated unions and members of the expelled Waterside Workers’ Union walked out. They had disagreed with the ruling of the chairman (Mr H. Campbell) not. to allow discussion of the decision of the national executive of the Federation of Labour concerning the> expulsion of the watersiders.
Some unionists said to-day it was the stormiest meeting in the council’s historyOne observer said 67 left the meeting, but Mr Campbell said to-day that no more than '2O to 30 walked out.
A letter from the national executive advised the council last night of its decision relating to the Waterside Workers’ Union, and instructed that no watersiders’ delegates be admitted to Trades Council meetings. It -was stated to-day that when the chairman’s ruling was challenged last night, voting was 70 to 70. The actingchairman—‘the secretary, Mr H. S. Callagher—gave his casting vote in favour of the chairman’s ruling.
