THE COST OF LIVING

LABOUR FEDERATION’S , POLICY ' " ' ' * SUPPORT FOR PRINCIPLE OF PRICE CONTROL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 17. If the cost of living in New Zealand should rise, the Federation of Labour will insist on wage and social security increases being made. This policy was determined by the national council of the federation to-day. It was also re-solved,-|o -resist every measure which would result in-higher prices. The council adopted the following resolution: “The Federation of Labour adheres strongly to the principle of price control and subsidies, believing they nan be used as effective instruments in holding the prices of commodities entering into the cost of living, and thus maintaining the living standard of wage-earners, social security beneficiaries, and other on lower incomes. ''

“The federation believes the price increases which may arise because of the relaxation of price control and the whittling down of subsidies and through other causes can only result in a lowering in the standard of living of the mass of the people, while favouring the privileged groups in the community.

“The federation will accordingly resist by all constitutional means every measure which will result in higher prices and will insist that, to the extent that the Post of living rises, wage rates and social'security benefits shall he increased accordingly.”
