LOAN FOR BURMA
OFFER BY BRITISH COMMON*WEALTH
(Rec. 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 17. The Foreign Secretary, Mr Ernest Bevin told the Burmese Ambassador in London to-day that the British Commonwealth had decided to offer Burma a loan to stabilise Burmese currency. The loan will be £6,000,000 sterling, contributed by the British Government, Australia, India, Pakistan, and Ceylon, according to a usually reliable source. It is understood Britain will contribute half the loan.
There will be no political strings attached. Diplomatic quarters here consider the decision as the first fruits of the Commonwealth policy to provide financial and econofnic backing for anti-Communist governments in Southeast Asia.
