FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 18, 1900). A Strict Censorship—As indidating the strictness of the censorship over correspondence from South Africa, Mr H. F. Nicoll has shown the “Guardian” a letter from Lorenzo Marquez. The letter came via Durban, and at the latter port it was officially opened and sealed again. The envelope had a notice on it to that effect stamped on it. —The Ashburton Send-off: A meeting of the Send-off Committee was held in Mr Friedlander’s office. After going over the balance-sheet, which showed a surplus of £l4 12s 6d, it was decided that the balance he paid over to the Canterbury War Fund. Mr P. H. Cox was thanked for his work in this matter.

A special train was dispatched for the south during the forenoon with 570 tons, but a special train from the north soon after arrived and there was between 800 and 900 tons of goods at the railway sidings.
