METHVEN FIRE BRIGADE

NEW AUTHORITY Under recent legislation relating to fire services, changes in organisation and control are m train, and these affect the Methven Fire Brigade in common witn others. A new fire brigade committee has been constituted comprising the nominee of the Methven brigade (Mr E. Kilworth) and three members nominated by the Ashburton Cqunty Council, namely Messrs M. D. McDowell, G. Callaghan and J. Carr.

At a recent meeting of this committe*e Mr Carr was elected chairman. The meeting considered the provisions of the Fire Services Act 1949 and asked the county clerk (Mr C. Campbell) and the engineer (Mr R. L. Lindsay) to prepare estimates for the year 1950-51. The immediate needs of the brigade, which at present consists of 13 men with a trailer pump as its sole equipment, are stated to be a suitable section, a fire station and an engine or' towing vehicle for alternative means of fire-fighting. These will, of course, involve considerable j capital expenditure, but will result in much improved fire protection for Methven properties. It is a point of interest that the committee named above will have control of any other brigades formed in in the district.
