Rail-car Speeds The Automobile Association (Hawke’s Bay) recently wrote to the Minister of Railways (Mr W. S. Goosman), seeking a reduction in the speed limit for rail traffic over all level crossings. The Minister, in his reply, said it was the practice to reduce the speed of trains and rail-cars over certain level crossings only where certain" exceptional conditions obtained. To accede to the association’s request that speeds of all rail-cars be considerably , reduced at all level crossings—even in urban areas —would defeat the object of the use of rail-cars. One of the principal advantages of rail-cars was a reduction in travelling time made possible by their higher speed.—P.A.
