RECREATION HALL
PROPOSAL FOR ASHBURTON COMMUNITY CENTRE AND SPORTS BODIES The proposal sponsored by the Ashburton Community Centre for a recreational hall in Ashburton was furthered at a meeting hold last evening at which were present representatives of the Ashburton Marching Association, the Ashburton Boxing Association, the Ashburton Rugby Union, Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club, the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society, the Ashburton Badminton Clubs, and the Ashburton Keep Fit Club. The meeting favoured a site in the Domain with a frontage on West Street or Walnut Avenue. “It is just a matter of courage and enthusiasfm to get the thing going,” said Mr G. H. Nicoll, representing the Fanciers’ Society.
The Ashburton Community Centre was negotiating with the Ashburton Borough Council for a section of land in the Domain, said Dr. W. R. Ryburn. Playing areas were adjacent to the proposed site which should be a great advantage to the Rugby Union, he said.
The following were appointed to a committee to investigate the hall project:—Dr. Ryburn (convener), Mrs T. Pile, Misses A. Pye, E. Jackson, Messrs G. H. Nicoll, J. Wall, KBarker, T. Pile, O. Morrison, T. Spicer, F. Kennedy, L. H. Freeman (secretary) and representatives of the Ashburton Badminton Club and the Boxing Association.
