CRICKET LECTURE
VISITING CAPTAIN PRAISES OVAL An interesting and educational address was given in the R.S.A. Hall last evening by Mr .1. G. Leggat, opening bat for Canterbury and the South Island, and captain- of the visiting Canterbury team, on the game played in Ashburton, and also some of his personal experiences. Mr Leggat elaborated on his remarks regarding the wicket on the Oval, which he had made before the match .and stated that such a wicket was a treat to play on, and the manner in which it “played” during the two days of the match, really showed the quality of it. The Mount Somers soil aided the growth, but required frequent rolling, and this was done voluntarily, in contrast to Christchurch, where all wickets were prepared by groundsmen, always on the job. In the course of his talk, Mr Leggat gave valuable and constructive criticism to members of the Ashburton,, representative team, and gave hints to the younger players, of which there was a fair representation. Mr Leggat also spoke on the recent English tour, and remarked that after his performances on the tour, T. B. Burtt, with V. Mankad of India, were regarded as the best left-hand bowlers.
