MINUS SPEEDOMETERS
SOME RAILWAY BUSES (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Feb.* 15. Concern was expressed by members of the Automobile Association (Otago) at a meeting last night that some railway buses were not equipped with speedometers. Mr G. W. Ferens said that the schedule to which buses in Central Otago ran was based on that of the large eight cylinder cars which formerly operated the service, and the buses in use at present could not hope to keep to the schedule. “‘Would a private company be granted a licence if it did not have speedometers in its buses?” asked a member. Mr Ferens: Not a hope.
The president (Mr I. Forsyth) said it was amazing that public buses should be allowed to operate in that state.
When the matter was referred to the Railways Department to-day, a spokesman said that when speedometers went out of commission they could not be replaced as the necessary parts could not be obtained ih the country. Their absence, he added, made the computation of mileages run a difficult matter.
