WARSHIPS VISIT TO LYTTELTON

AIRCRAFT-CARRIER AND SUBMARINE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. , The aircraft-carrier Sydney, the de stroyer Bataan, and the submarine Telemachus will be at Lyttelton from March 10 to March 12. The cruiser Australia and the de stroyer Warramunga will visit Dunedin and the frigate Murchison will visit Timaru between the same dates. This information was given to-day by the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald) in a statement on the combined naval exercises /to be held in New Zealand waters soon. He said the exercises would be the most comprehensive ever attempted in Nerv Zealand waters. This he said had been made possible by the presence of the Sydney and the Telemachus. The exercises would embrace all types of naval warfare for which the ships were equipped. The combined Australian fleet and New Zealand squadron would carry out a large-scale convoy exercise over three days. The two navies would oppose each other in many actions, in one of which the Australian fleet would operate as an enemy attacking task force and the New Zealand squadron the defence force. Aircraft from the Sydney and the Royal New Zealand Air Force would play a major role.
