TIKIWHATA TUNNEL
FAULTS IN CEILING (P.A.) GISBORNE, This Day. Faults which have developed in the lining of Tikiwhata tunnel on the Gis-borne-Wairoa section of the East Coast main trunk railway hold out the prospect of interruption in the rail service on this section of the line. Estimates of the damage have not yet been completed, but superficial evidence of deterioration is fairly extensive, and the Railways Department already has made temporary repairs to prevent fails of debris from the arch of the tunnel. The first indication of serious trouble with the tunnel lining occurred recently when a section of concrete fell from the arch when a train was passing through the tunnel. Concrete struck the window of the engine cab, and the fireman was injured by flying glass. The concrete was found to be only half an inch in thickness, indicating pronounced weakness in the ceiling of the tunnel. Tikiwhata tunnel is just over a mile and a half long, and construction was completed about 1940. It is the longest tunnel in the East Coast main trunk line, and is one of three major works between Waikokopu and Gisborne.
