TAME DRAW

FOURTH TEST IN SOUTH AFRICA AUSTRALIANS HAVE BATTING PRACTICE k (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30) CAPE TOWN, Feb. 14,South Africa forced a gallant draw iu the fourth test at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, to-day, ending Australia’s sequence of six test wins over the Springboks, including three in 1935-36. It was a glorious hour for the South Africans when they averted a followon in the first 60 minutes of dr&matic and bright batting, and virtually assured a draw. Moroney, with 118 in the first innings and 101 not out to-day, set a new record as the first batsmen to score two separate centuries in one match in tests between South Africa and Australia.

South Africa resumed the fight to avert a follow-on to-day on a wicket which was hard and wearing in parts. The not out batsmen, Fullerton and Mann, began so confidently that after two overs each, Bill Johnston and Loxtn were replaced by Lindwall and Miller, out even this failed to stem the flow of runs. South Africa needed nine to avert a follow-on when Lindwall sent Mann’s off-stump flying. Mann, with a valiant 52 in 113 minutes, and Fullerton had rescued the innings with an eighth wicket stand for 94. A sparkling drive by Fullerton for four off Lindwall rushed the score to 316 and saved the follow-on with two wickets intact, Fullerton batted 220 minutes. He hit nine fours to make his 88. South Africa’s highly meritorious 352 were made in 512 minutes. Australia, leading by 113 on the first innings, had to bat again for the formality of playing out time. With a draw inevitable, the game, ceased to be a contest and became a batting exhibition, and 'dreary one at that, and Moroney wgs frequently barracked for slow batting. The game eventually petered out tamely with- Harvey and Moroney getting batting practice. Scores: —
