REPRESENTATIVE GAME
CRICKET
POSITION VERY EVEN At the close of play last evening, in the representative cricket match between Canterbury and Ashburton at the Domain Oval, the issue was very open, the visiting side having lost one for 30 in reply to Ashburton’s useful total of 273. When play was resumed yesterday afternoon, D. Smith and I. Griffiths carried their second wicket stand to 110, easily the best partnership of the innings. M. Poore, who was was brought into the Canterbury side at the last minute, owing to the absence of O’Malley, then took a turn with the ball and dismissed both men in his first over. Smith made 52 and Griffiths one fun fewer, both batting excellently. Neither Harper nor Wall stayed long, but Cullen and H. Jordan then made a valuable stand. After batting very carefully earlier, Jordan opened out, and his 21 included four boundaries. C. Robertson scored 19 briskly and Cullen went on to 69, made in about two hours. The final total was 273. Poore, a slow bowler who turns them both ways, finished with five for 3S off 17 overs. He kept an immaculate length, and all batsmen found his trundling difficult to score off. M .E. Chappie, two for 41 off 20 overs, did best of the other bowlers, but was not suited at all by the dead wicket. Condliffe and Harris opened the Canterbury innings, but scored very slowly against accurate bowling. Just on time, with 30 on the board after an hour’s play, Zouch dismissed Condliffe for 15. Harris was 14 not out. Scores were:— ASHBURTON First Innings L. Kerr, hit wicket, b Bell .. 10 D. Smith, Ibw, b Poore ..... 52 I. Griffiths, b Poore .. .. 51 J. Harper, Ibw, b Poore .. .. 2 H. , To-day’s Play Against an accurate but not dangerous Ashburton attack, Canterbury at the luncheon adjournment had lost three wickets for 130 runs. Harris and Stanley batted steadily, and then Stanley was dismissed by Jordan for 27. Harris and Dowker carried on confidently until the former was run out with his score at 54. Dowker was joined by Moffatt, and the rate of scoring slowed considerably until at lunch the total was 130 for three.
