Early Historians
The latest post-primary school bul-
Min is entitled “Some Early Historians.” In the historian’s own words are given chapters of the writers’, early experiences in New Zealand and among the names are those of Alfred Saunders, A. S, Thompson, Vincent Pyke and Sir John Gorst. The writers in general rise to the greatness of their occasions. Humour that was not part of the plan crops up here and there, as in the following account of the arrival of Governor Fitzroy in Auckland in December 1843. “Captain Fitzroy, excited by the occasion, cried aloud when stepping ashore, “I have come among you to do all the good I can.’ The crowd of 50 persons replied to this noble sentiment with cheers . . . the guard of honour struck up ‘The king of the cannibal islands,’ to which appropriate air His Excellency the Governor marched to Government House.”
