FREE REPUBLIC SAID TO BE IDEAL CAPE TOWN, Feb. 12. The South African Minister of Lands (Mr J. G. Strydom) said that South Africa would act by gradual steps until the ideal of a free, independent republic was realised. “The only real form of independence suited to South Africa is a. republic, but nothing will be' done in undue haste,” said Mr Strydom. “The Union will not make the United States and Britain her enemies. The bonds of friendship will remain, provided they are not injurious to South African interests.”
