LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 14, 1900). Tinwald School Committee. —At the meeting of the Tinwald School Committee there were present: Messrs Clothier (chairman), J. Gudsell, Hampton and C. Hawkins. The master reported that-the roll number was 14S, and the average attendance over the last two weeks was 115. It was decided to vote for Messrs H. G. Baker (Methven), D. Buddo (Fernside) and W. J. Silcoclc (AslTGurton) as members of the Canterbury Education Board.— The Contingent Procession: is stated that windows overlooking the route of the procession of the third contingent in Christchurch to-morrow have been sold at prices as high as £2.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 14, 1925). Growth of Maize—Maize is making prolific growth on the flats of the Poverty Bay district and many. of the crops are already more than nine feet high, says an exchange. Farmers, however, are inclined to believe that the actual returns of maize will be small, as the maize itself has grown too much. The cobs are not forming up well, and there are very few really big cobs to be seen, even where the crop appears to be good.—Floodlights: The illumination of shop windows by flood electric light has been introduced in a portion of Tancred Street. A block of shops near East Street has been canvassed and as a result 10 lights, going from sunset to midnight, have now been erected.
