BOWLING CLUB
THE ASHBURTON CLUB. REVIEW OF THE PAST YEAR. ’ * The annual meeting of the Ashburton Bowling Club was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening, when Mr S. Mitchell presided over a good attendance. The annual report stated that the weather during last season was the worst for many years and seriously interfered with competitions and matches with other clubs. The afternoon players had the best of a. bad season. An innovation was an afternoon progressive singles .tournament, played on three days, and the games created a good deal of interest. The top green was in use nearly all the season, playing well and retaining its grass throughout. Both greens had been top-dressed and specially treated, and should be in good order when the next season opened. Thanks were due to Mr IV. Hi. Higgins (green supervisor) and Mr IV. E. Box (green-keeper) for their work and care in providing a good playing surface through the season. During the year the president (Mr IV. J. Minogue) was transferred to Christchurch, Mr S. Mitchell filling the vacancy, with credit. Interest in club competitions was maintained, but bad weather delayed play, the club pairs and club rinks being unfinished. The former had been allotted to the winners of the first life. Results were: Championship singles and holder of Bell Cup, E. A. Cockroft 1, IV. Tulloch 2. Champion pairs, I>. Horsburgh and IV. H. Woods (s) 1, J. Bond and A. S. Mactier (s) 2. Club pairs, H. D. Porter and E. A. Cockroft (s). Colts’ singles, C. B. Gowans 1, D. E. Tobin. 2. Tho Club was represented in the Maddison Cup champion of champions competition 'by E. A. Cockroft. The Sub-Centre championships were won by Methven (singles), and Allenton (pairs and rinks). The New Year’s Day pairs were abandoned owing to fain. The Bullock Pennant was again won by Allenton. IV. B. Thomas and E. A. Cockroft (s) were runners-up in the Sub-Centre Easter pairs. After winning tho first round of the Bristol Cup, against Geraldine, the club was for various reason unable to play in the final. Thanks were due to Messrs IV. H. Stevens and G. E. Glen for donations of buttons for play in rinks and pairs respectively. Unfortunately very few matches were played for these buttons. The rink skipped by E. Sawle (H. Lamb, J. H. Hawke, F. H. Steel and E. Sawle) had two wins and won the Stevens Buttons. The other buttons were the property of the club and would be played for each season. J. IV. Smith and IV. R. Lane (s) won two games, the only ones played. Tho debit balance for the year was due to the purchase of a bolt of blazer cloth, a lot of which was still on hand. There was room for 10 or 12 more members, and this would place the club in a good position. The report went on to express thanks to the ladies who dispensed afternoon teas. Reference to the death of several prominent members was made. The chief items on the financial statement were:—Receipts Credit balance, July, 1936, £l2 10s, subscriptions £167 15s, refreshment levy, £25 16s 6d, rent of lockers £5 7s 6d, entry fees, club competitions £lO 11s, sales of blazer cloth £7 17s 6d, debit balance £7 5s 2d.
