The first meeting of the new trotting season, the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August fixture, opened at Addington on Saturday, in dull, cold weather. The attendance was not up to the average, but the totalisator (wiu and place) handled £33,115, compared witii £27,920 on the corresponding day last year. POVERTY BAY HUNT CLUB, GRANTHAM WINS STEEPLECHASE GISBORNE, August 7. The Poverty Bay Hunt Club’s annual meeting was held to-day in overcast and boisterous weather. The going was good. The totalisator handled £5356 10s, against £3807 'los last year, an in crease of £1549. EVENTS AT ROSEHILL. (United Press Association—Copyright.) SYDNEY, August 7. Stirring finishes were seen at the Rosehill races to-day, four events being won by no more than a neck margin. Several New Zealanders were engaged, but only Deputy-Ruler, who was second to Moonray in the first division of the Flying Handicap, was placed. The August Handicap, of £175, one mile and a quarter, was won by Fireman 8.8, with Friar’s Switch 8.6 second, and Dulcedo 8.12 third. There were seven starters, including Improvement. Much interest was taken in the French horse Genetout, who was having his first outing in the second division of the Flying Handicap, which was won by a head by Silver Rose from Tuckiar and El Senorita. Genetout was a little at sea, but, galloping strongly near the finish, was fifth. 9 EVENTS AT CAULFIELD. MELBOURNE, August 7. At the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s steeplechase meeting at Caulfield today results were: — Australian Hurdles, of £1500 ; three miles and a quarter and 20 yards.— Dress Suite, 9.6 (A. Fullarton) 1, Bridge, 11.0 2, Highland Fling, 10.7 3. Won by six lengths, 20 lengths between second and third. Moondah Plate, of £500; six furlongs.—Valiant Chief, 9.2 (Breasley) 1, Aurie’s Star, 10.0 2, Regular Bachelor 9.5 3. Won by half a. head, third two lengths away.
