PERSONAL.
Miss E. M. Bell, who was in charge of the refreshment room at the Ashburton Railway Station for over a year, and who left last week'to be married, was entertained at afternoon tea by members of the staff, on behalf of whom the Stationmaster (Mr G. H. Chambers) presented her with a cake stand and a butter dish. The staff of Messrs G. Hefford and Co., Ltd., met on Saturday to honour Miss I. Pritchard on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Mr G. D. Hefford, on behalf on the staff, in presenting Miss Pritchard with an oak tea wagon and a fruit bowl, as a token of the esteem in which she was held, complimented Miss Pritchard on her long association with the firm and wished her every success and happiness in her new sphere of life. A high tribute to the work of Mr F. W. Watt was paid by the chairman of the Ashburton Hospital Board (Mr W. G. Gallagher) to-day when he referred to Mr Watt’s death. Many years of outstanding service had been given by Mr Watt to the hospital, as well as to the community generally, said Mr Gallagher. He had been instrumental in instigating several progressive moves in the town. The Board placed on record its regret at Mr Watt’s deatli and its appreciation oh his services, and members stood in silence. A letter from the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee expressed sympathy in Mr Watt’s death and paid a tribute to the work of Mr Watt as one of its first members.
