GOODS SERVICES.
PURCHASE BY THE GOVERNMENT TELEGRAM TO COUNTY COUNCIL. “Another stall!” “Only a shuffle!’.’. “That may be worth framing!” These expressions were used by members of . the Ashburton County Council this afternoon when the following telegram was received from the Transport Department:— “Owners of following services have, been invited to negotiate with the Government for the sale of that part of their businesses running in competition for' long distances with the railways • “Ashburton Transport Company, A. J. M. Wheeler, A. B. Hayward, Whittaker and Payton, Hufnphris Motors. “No restriction on the transport of farm produce by farmers’ own vehicles is contemplated, but an endeavour \\ ill bo made to make the public tianspoit service attractive and efficient, so that it will be to farmers’ own advantage to use it.” ‘ , . Members declared that the efficiency of the present services would disappear under State control, and it was decided ’to enter a protest against the taking over of the goods services by the Government.
