The United States retains the America’s Cup, the 17th contest for which took place off Newport this week between Mr H. S. Vanderbilt’s Ranger (defender) and Mr T. O. M. Sopwith’s Endeavour 11. The Ranger gained her fourth successive victory. Despite crossing the starting line ahead of time and being compelled to cross again, the Endeavour made the best race of the series. ' The Ranger assumed a lead of 200 yards before the Endeavour could rectify her error. The American boat increased her lead to three-quarters of a mile before the first turning, but the Endeavour made up 30 seconds on the second leg, in which it outraced the Ranger and seemed to be overhauling the American on the third leg in a 15mile south-west wind, but the Ranger was too far ahead, finishing witli a lead of a quarter of a mile and establishing a new record for the rectangular course.
