STRIKES AN OBJECT

STEAMER TEES AT CHATHAMS.

BATTLING WITH HEAVY SEAS. ALARM AMONG PASSENGERS. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The steamer Tees, now at Lyttelton, is reported to have struck an object while passing through the straits between Owenga and Pitt Islands in the Chathams last week. The vessel was in the straits at midnight, battling with heavy seas when she ran into a wall of water, bumped heavily, and was carried on by a big following sea. When the vessel bumped she lurched heavily and shipped much water, causing a good deal of alarm among the 21 passengers. The Tees is to be docked at Lyttelton for survey. It is understood a preliminary marine inquiry has already been held at Wellington.
