SUCCESS FOR THE RANGER. DESPITE LIGHTENING OF RIVAL. (United Press Association —Copyright..) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 4. ( Mr H. S. Vanderbilt’s Ranger (defender) won the third race in the contest with Mr T. 0. M. Sopwith’s Endeavour 11. for the America’s Cup. It was previously reported that Mr iSopwith had jettisoned 2) tons of lead 'ballast from the Endeavour II in the (hope that this would increase the speed in light winds. THIRD WIN BY RANGER. LEAD GAINED IN LIGHT WIND. (Received This Day, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, August A. Less decisively beaten than hitherto, Endeavour 11. in the third event for the America’s Cup nevertheless finished 500 yards and 4min 27sec . after the Ranger,* whose superiority, speed and ease of handling are now definitely established. The winner’s elapsed time was 3hrs 54min 20sec. She crossed the starting line first in a 12-mile wind, which, however, began' to diminish, soon dropping to 10 miles. The Ranger found light air to her ‘ liking, and rapidly forged three-quarters of . a mile ahead of the Endeavour, which, however, began to catch up when the wind perceptibly freshened, and made up a quarter of a mile at the half-way mark. The British boat continued to diminish her opponent’s lead when the wind increased to 15 miles, but it was impossible to ( overtake .the Ranger over the remaining distance!.’ L The is believed, to have set a .new record for the beat to windward oil' the first’ 15 miles. The unofficial time was 2hrs Bmin 40sec.
