The King has awarded the Edward medal for gallantry to L. M, Bangley, employed in one of the gold mines at Kakamaga, in Kenya, for the efforts he made to save the life of a native worker after an explosion in the mine in January, 1936. ■ Mr Bangley was firing the second found of nine holes when One hole exploded prematurely and he. w’as blown some distance away. His native assistant, struck by rock, fell with .his face (in water. Mr Bangley returned in the darkness, found the native, and carried him to safety. The injured man was (taken to the surface but died from- injuries to his head.—British Official Wireless. The Edward Medal was established joy King Edward VII in 1907 as a recognition of heroic acts performed by miners and quarrymen, and of others who have, endangered their lives in rescuing those so employed.
