PERSONAL.

Mr C. S. Brannigan, of Arthur’s Pass, and formerly stock inspector for Ashburton, arrived from the south yesterday on a short visit here. The Venerable Archdeacon A. J. Petrie was the speaker at the weekly luncheon of the Ashburton Rotary Club to-day. Advice has been received that Dr. G. Moore and Mrs Moore, of Ashburton, arrived in London last Saturday. Dr. Moore proposes to further his studies before returning to New Zealand. Mr J. Moore, of Ruapuna, accompanied by Mrs Moore, left last evening for Wellington to join the farmers’ party which will make a tour in Australia, where they will remain for a month. A motion of thanks to Mr S'. W. Gower for his services as acting-head-master of the Ashburton Borough School, pending the arrival of the new headmaster, was passed at the meeting of the school committee last evening. Mr M. J. Leith (recently appointed headmaster of the Ashburton Borough School) was welcomed at the meeting of the committee last evening on behalf of members by Mr W. H. Sarney. who presided in the absence of the chairman (Dr. J. Connor). Mr Leith said he hoped that he would work in harmony with the committee, and for the good of the school. The Borough School had a good reputation and he hoped that it would be maintained.
