SHEEP-OWNER FINED.
«&>. ANIMALS LEFT IN BARE PADDOCK (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, August 3. Stated by the prosecution to have left 80 sheep in a paddock so bare of pasture that 20 of them died of starvation James Kitchen appeared before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Palmerston Court to-day, charged with, being the owner of ho failed to supply them with proper and sufficient food. It was stated by the inspector for the Society for the Prevention ot Cruelty to Animals that on July 22 the sheep were in a paddock belonging to the borough of Palmerston. On going through them he li%d. counted 60 live animals and 20 dead ones. There was no feed of any description in the paddock, and no attempt whatever had been made to provide any. The living sheep were in very poor condition, and several were staggering about through weakness. The cause of death of the 20 sheep was undoubtedly starvation. Tlie Magistrate convicted Kitchen and fined him £7, with costs.
