HEAVY BOMBARDMENT. SHELLS IN CENTRE OF MADRID. FIERCE ENCOUNTER IN HILLS. i (United Press Association—Copyright.) MADRID, August 3. The insurgent batteries round Madrid began an extremely heavy bombardment of the capital at 12.30 a.m. More than 60 shells fell in the centre of the city in 15 minutes. The telephone company’s building was hit twice. People flew to cellars and other places of refuge. ■ A message from Heruel says thero is a growing possibility of the rebels invading Cuenca Province and threatening the highway from Valencia to Madrid, the lifeline to the capital. The Loyalists, however, claim that they have repulsed the latest insurgent attacks, besides heavily damaging convoys and concentration camps by bomb ing. ' : . i A fierce encounter is reported at the hill village of Nornaque, where, the rebels are endeavouring to dislodge , the Catalan Anarchist militia from thentrenches with machine-guns and bayonets. _ . The largest hospital was hit and the patients had to be transferred to the basements. NON-INTERVENTION PLAN. t FRENCH REPLY TV BRITAIN. PARIS, Aughst 2. The French reply to the British proposals agrees to the resumption of control of the Franco-Spanish frontier directly similar control of the Portuguese border is certain. Belligerent rights should be granted! to both sides when there has been substantial withdrawal of volunteers, but measures must be taken to prevent the useless extension of war operations at sea. The reply adds that steps must also be taken to prevent evasion of the non-intervention agreement. NO MUNITIONS FROM CANADA. OTTAWA, August 2. An Order-in-Council banning enlistment, recruiting, or raising funds for Spain, is declared effective. No munitions will be allowed to be sent anywhere without a permit.
