DIVIDED CHURCH
AN OUTSPOKEN ARCHBISHOP. THE CALL TO RIVAL SHRINES. LEADERS’ CARE OF TRADITIONS. (United Press Association—Copyright., (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, August 3. The Archbishop of York (the Most Rev. Dr. William Temple), opening the world conference on Faith and Order, at Edinburgh, delivered an outspoken sermon on the evils of a divided Church. “Even ordinary lay folk,” the Archbishop said, “are more ready to come together in the face of a recurrence of paganism, than are the leaders of ecclesiastical organisations, which are intent on maintaining their traditions and keeping their organisations in working order. How can the Church call on men to worship one God if it is calling them to rival shrines?”
