RUGBY FOOTBALL.
THE ASHBURTON UNION DECISIONS OF THIE COMMITTEE, i Explanations of the alleged incidents in which players were ordered off in games on the Saturday before last, and did not appear before the Union were given by the referees (Messrs C. Stevenson and S. Pennall), at the meeting i of the Management Committee of the, Ashburton Rugby Union last evening. Present were Messrs H. R. D. Porter (president), E. S. Chambers, N. Robilliard, A. Doig, A. Thomson, P. Doig, C. Thomas, and A. McCormick. Mr Stevenson said that in liis game all through the first half there was continued appealing. Allenton scored a try and three or four of the Methveu boys kept appealing. He sent one to the sideline and said if the player did not apologise he would send him before the Rugby Union. The boy apologised to him at half-time, and then apologised in front of the other players. Mr S. Pennall said he had warned several of the Methven players about late tackling and appealing. One tackled a player after the whistle blew and he sent him to the side-line just before time. The player apologised after the game, when Mr Pennall told him it would be quite all right. The .president told the referees that the offences did not seem very serious. Mistakes might have been made, but they did not seem to be very serious ones. After the referees withdrew the president said he did) not think the matter called for any serious discussion. In one case the player had been given an option. Mr Chambers said he had been at the meeting of the Referees’ Association. As far as the two incidents were concerned the Union could very well let the matter drop. Both referees realised they had made mistakes. He did not think if the referees had occasion to order players off in the future they would neglect their duty to the Union. It was decided not to take any further action. The Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) advised that the Ashburton Domain Board was prepared to supply the lime and seed for repairing the Oval ground, provided the Union would carry out it 9 offer of doing the work, which the Domain curator would supervise. The South Canterbury Union confirmed next Saturday as tbe date for the third grade match at Ashburton. It was decided to start the match at 2.45 p.m. The Old Boys Club wrote withdrawing its junior team from the competition,' giving explanations for this decision. The action in withdrawing the team was confirmed. ■ The Rakaja Club wrote withdrawing its third grade team from the competition owing to lack of players. The club said it had been able to field a full team in this grade only twice this season. The withdrawal w r as confirmed. The Rakaia Club also advised that it had made arrangements for the Town
v. Country match to bo played at Rakaia ou August 28. A closed day r had been granted at the Rakaia Domain on August 28. It was decided to ask '‘the club to arrange for the match to be played on September 11. Attention was drawn by the Rakaia Club to the fact that it was not notified of the default of the Old Boys team on July 24, until one o’clock that afternoon. The committee considered tins unfair as not only were all the players ready to leave but the club engaged a bus and had to pajd waiting time, the letter said. The majority of i>ne players Had to travel some miles and unless they were notified earlier the club was not able to notify them ui a deiault. it was decided to refer the letter to the Old Boys Club. The senior knock-out competition will oo continued on Saturday. Old Boys will meet Technical Old Boys? in the Domain. McCormick) should be asked for an explanation of the choice. The Methven Club had previously questioned the selection of a player above others who had turned out to train. He said that the selector appeared to luiye thought some of the chosen players were better than he thought they ‘•;vere. Mr McCormick said it just amounted to what the selector thought. Watson had played himself into the team on two games. He had nothing to do with what the Methven Club thought. He had not picked Watson to train after the trial game, hut after the following Saturday he thought him suitable for a place. The reason why he had chosen him was that it was a matter for the selector’s opinion above that of anyone else. “I thought that perhaps he and the half-back played themselves out of the team on Saturday,” said the president. He added that the very best team was wanted to go to Timaru as i.t was the •hardest game of the season. Mr McCormick said he had been with two teams to Timaru and both had been (let down by weak Ashburton tackling. Every player in the team was good on defence as well as attack, and Watson was one of the best tacklers in the competition. The team as selected was confirmed. SOUTH CANTERBURY JUNIORS.
