BOROUGH AFFAIRS
COLLECTION OF RATES. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr' AA 7 . H. AVoods), Messrs E. H. Orr, R. Kerr, AV. H. Robinson, J. Shaw, J. T. Pratley, J. McElhinney, S. Mitchell, H. AY. Slierratt, E. Buchanan and Dr. J. Connor. The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £657 16s Sd, the chief items being: Rates £429 7s 2d (current), £4l 19s lOd (arrears), rents £46 Is, water supplies £lO 13s 7d, abattoir fees £7l 2s Bd. The Public AA 7 orks Department’s representative at Christchurch (Mr F. Langbein) wrote regarding the necessity for having railway crossing signs placed on the left-hand side of the road instead of on the right, and asking the Council to make adjustments where necessary in its area. The question was left in the hands of the chairman of the By-Laws Cbmmittee and the inspector. The Citizens’ Committee of the Ashburton Silver Band wrote inviting members of the Borough Council to attend the concert in the Majestic Theatre to-morrow evening, when the new instruments would be handed over by the Mayor and the County Chairman (Mr F. Frampton). The invitation was accepted. / Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator in regard to work carried out by liis staff in the past two weeks. Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which showed that there was a credit balance of £57 Bs. Receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £3O 17s 6d.
