FOOTBALLER’S FATAL INJURY. (Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, This Day. During the final match of the Otamatea Rugby Union’s junior competition on Saturday, Colin John McLean, aged 21, playing for YYaipu juniors, was knocked out. He recovered and attempted to resume playing, hut his condition became worse and he was taken to the Whangarei Hospital, where he died early yesterday morning. At an inquest opened. yesterday before Mr G. H. Morrish, Dr. Dawson, said, that deceased was quite conscious when admitted to the hospital, but complained of pains on the left side of his head. An examination showed a small lump on the left side of the skull, just in front of the ear. Early yesterday morning deceased collapsed suddenly and died.' The doctor was not prepared to give a definite cause for death, but said he believed the collapse was due to haemorrhage within the skull or odema of the brain. The inquest was adjourned, a postmortem being ordered. * . YOUNG WOMAN KILLED "lN CAB. DUNEDIN, This Day. Skidding in loose metal near Waikouaiti early yesterday morning, a motor-car driven by Mr Eric Francis White overturned, and a passenger, Miss Mona Kirkwood, aged 21, residing at Waikouaiti, received fatal injuries. The driver escaped with facial injuries. A YOUNG MAN DROWNED. AUCKLAND, August 1. An Air Fore* photographer, Mr Leonard Orr Smellie, aged 23, was drowned about a quarter of a mile from the air base wharf at Hobsonville on Saturday afternoon when a sudden gust of wind overturned a small yacht in which he and another photographer were sailing. Mr Smellie was a Christchurch man, who came up to Hobsonville air base three years ago. . - ’ EIFFELTON RESIDENTS INJURED Two residents of Eiffelton have been admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital with brazen legs.
