BRITAIN AND ITALY.

MR CHAMBERLAIN’S GESTURE. “PERSONAL LETTER OF FRIENDSHIP.”

(United Press Association —Copyright.) ROME, August 1.

Replying to the cordial message from Signor Mussolini which the Italian Ambassador (Count Grandi) delivered to him last Tuesday during the talks in London on the European situation, the British Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) has sent an important communication to II Duce. The communication is described as a “personal letter of friendship.” The text is not disclosed, but an official announcement that the letter was received in Rome was well received in Italian official circles. It is considered that it revives hopes of a rapprochement between Britain and Italy. It is understood that Mr Chamberlam reaffirms the principles of the gentlemen’s agreement between Britain and Italy, and emphasises that Bri tain and Italy has not conflicting interests in the Mediterranean. He states that both countries are anxious to limit the Spanish conflict.

The Italian newspapers are even more hopeful of a settlement of the non-intervention deadlock, which yesterday they declared Russia had killed.
