MATCHES IN ASHBURTON. A tournament arranged by Mr H. Freeman was held by the Ashburton Boxing Association in the stadium on Saturday evening as a benefit for Les Adams, * the Ashburton light heavyweight professional champion. There was a good attendance. The tournament realised more than £2O. Twelve bouts were held between boys of Messrs Freeman’s and S. Terris’s schools. Mr H. D. Johnston (president of the Ashburton Boxing Association) was the referee. No decisions were given in the matches, which were between R. Plunkett and C. Horsburgh, F. Hill and R. Withell, Ron Tonks and P. Connolly, A. Melrose and R. Hunt, Flint Hill and W. Tonks, R. Smith and C. Horsburgh,

Robert Tonks and McCandlisli, J. McDonald and W. Daniels, T. Tonks and A. Brooks, J. Horsburgli and G. Aldridge, S. Guthrie and T. Dix, T. Lister and R. Withell.

Trophies were awarded as follow: — Most scientific boxer, 11. Smith; best first-year boy, C. Horsburghj best mosquito-weight, J. Horsburghj best attender at training classes, R. Hunt. The trophies were given by Messrs F. B. Robilliard, E. Hopwood, Hunt and McGlashin (Timaru). Mr Robilliard was the timekeeper and Mr F. Porter the announcer. The British Boxing Board of Control has decided to recognise the contest between Joe Louis and Tommy Farr as an eliminating match for the world heavy-weight championship, the winner to meet Max Schmeling.
